About the Barcelona Tour to Montserrat
Explore Montserrat from Barcelona on our full-day small group guided trip with convenient pickup and drop-off service. Enjoy beautiful panoramic mountain scenery and unique rock formations. Ride a cogwheel train to the historic monastery, one of the most famous in Catalonia, and home to a famous statue of the Black Madonna. This day trip is perfect for all lovers of nature, art, and history!
Visit one of the most religious sites in Catalonia, Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey. Since its founding in the 11th century, this monastery has served as a pilgrimage site and is also home to Europe's oldest boys' choir.
Discover Montserrat Abbey on a small-group walking tour. See the sacred statue of the Black Madonna, also known as La Moreneta or Virgin of Montserrat, dating back to the 12th century, and hear the legend of a bright light and heavenly music that led to the cave where the statue was found.
Ride uphill in a cogwheel train and reach the Benedictine Monastery built halfway up the mountain. With each second on your way up, the views of the valley will get more inspiring. During your free time, attend the liqueur tasting and support monks and nuns by purchasing homemade Montserrat Crema Catalana, their most famous product!
For a fuller experience, choose an option with food and wine included. Enjoy the Catalan lifestyle with incredible wine tastings and lunch at a picturesque winery.
Montserrat was absolutely stunning! I was amazed by the views, walking paths, and the area's rich history! When I visited, I was surprised to find no line to see the Black Madonna from the lower part of the church. I know it's usually quite busy! The church is beautiful, and liquor tasting was a great addition to the tour. It was wonderful to support the Monastery by purchasing souvenirs they crafted by hand.
My family and I loved the Barcelona day trip to Montserrat. We selected the extended option with lunch and wine tasting included, which was the best! The monastery is beautiful, and our guide, Mariana, shared plenty of interesting information. She was really welcoming, and my kids loved her! The food and wine at the winery were super delicious. I loved that it was owned by a family—quite authentic!

Montserrat Camino Crossing
As a place of significant religious importance, Montserrat has become one of the pilgrimage stops. Based on historical records, pilgrims have walked to Montserrat since at least the 12th century.
The way through Montserrat is closely associated with the Camino de Santiago, specifically as part of the Camino Catalan, which is one of the lesser-known routes to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, Spain. Legend mainly associated with the Montserrat Monastery is the Holy Grotto, where the Virgin of Montserrat was reportedly found. This statue, dating back to Romanesque times, is familiar with its black color, so people today often refer to it as the Black Madonna.
